Earlier this month, I shared something that felt big to me on Threads.

After nearly two years of conversations, reflection, and development, my co-author and I released our first book and companion workbook.

We officially launched on March 16.

The project grew out of a podcast we started in early 2024. Month after month, we talked about resilience, reinvention, burnout, identity, and the quiet questions we and a lot of women carry when life stops going according to plan.

Those conversations eventually became something more structured and evolved into something people could hold in their hands, work through, and use as a guide for their own reflection.

So when the book links went live, I shared it the way most first-time authors do:

With excitement.

A little disbelief.

And a lot of gratitude.

And then a comment came in.

Someone suggested that the price of the book might be too high for the community we say we want to serve.

Later in the thread, they also raised concerns about the tools we used to bring the book cover to life. Which I now understand to be their “thing” on Threads.

None of this surprised me.

When you move from sharing ideas for free to building something sustainable, people often start asking different questions.

But the exchange did make me pause and reflect on something deeper.

There is a quiet assumption that shows up again and again in spaces focused on healing, growth, or community support:

That the people doing this work should somehow be able to do it without resources.

That if your work is meant to support people navigating systems, inequities, or hardship, then it should always be available at little or no cost and that sustainability is somehow at odds with service.

But the truth is more complicated than that.

This book and workbook didn’t appear overnight.

They grew out of hundreds of hours of conversations, reflection, editing, designing, formatting, problem-solving, and learning the mechanics of publishing. And to be honest, the work continues as we navigate the mainstream channels of distribution of our work.

We don’t have a PR firm.

We don’t have a production team.

We don’t have investors.

We have two people, a shared vision, and the skills we’ve built over years of doing creative and intellectual work.

So we used what we had.

We wrote.

We edited.

We designed.

And that’s the part that sometimes gets lost in conversations about pricing, platforms, or tools.

When people build something meant to support others, especially work rooted in lived experience, sustainability isn’t a betrayal of the mission at all.

In fact, It’s what makes the mission possible.

If the work is meant to continue, grow, and reach more people, it has to be able to support the people doing it too.

That doesn’t mean everyone will find value in what we created.

Honestly, that’s okay.

Not every book is meant for every reader.

For the people who choose to engage, the book and workbook are an entry point into deeper reflection, conversation, and community.

What we’re building doesn’t stop at the page.

It lives in the conversations, the gatherings, and the ways people begin to see themselves and their lives differently as they move through it.

But the assumption that work meant to help others must remain permanently under-resourced is something worth questioning.

Because the communities we care about deserve tools, thoughtful resources, and work that has the time and care behind it to actually help people move forward.

And sometimes that means the people creating those resources have to build them the same way many independent creators do:

One step at a time.

With the tools they have.

And the belief that the work is worth bringing into the world.

Since that exchange, something else has happened.

Our first in-person book launch in Sacramento sold out of the bundles we brought with us.

And through relationship-building, alignment and manifestation (which we talk about in our book), 200 print copies of the book are now being ordered to be included in a curated swag bag for an upcoming event on April 11!

The same work that was questioned is now being circulated, supported, and placed directly into people’s hands.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced this pattern.

There is often a moment where something is questioned, minimized, or misunderstood right before it becomes visible in a way that can no longer be ignored.

So I’ve learned not to take those moments as signals to shrink.

They are often signals to stand still long enough for the work to speak for itself.

We’re still at the beginning.

But what I know now, more clearly than I did in the beginning of March, is this:

The question isn’t whether this work should exist.

The question is whether we are willing to build the conditions that allow it to continue.

And we are.
