There’s a difference between being educated and being trained to submit.

This week, I’m sitting with what it means to be formed inside institutions that never intended to affirm your full humanity. Not just misinformed — but misaligned. Conditioned through atmosphere. Through tone. Through who gets invited through the front door and who gets redirected. Through who is allowed to lead and who must quietly outperform under supervision.

Woodson names something that still feels uncomfortably current:

When authority is structurally misaligned, you don’t just experience injustice, you internalize hierarchy.

You start adjusting yourself. You measure your ambition against someone else’s comfort. You learn which doors are “not for you” without anyone ever saying it directly. And if no one names that conditioning, you carry it into adulthood thinking it’s personality.

This week gets into what education installs beneath the surface, how success becomes separation, and how easily protest becomes performance when there is no constructive program for building something different.

I’m also naming something more personal:

What it means to realize that you were trained for participation, not sovereignty.

Reflection Questions for the Week:

Where in your life have you been made to work under “inferior authority”—and what did that teach you about what you deserved?
What did your environment teach you — not through textbooks, but through tone, access, and who was allowed through which door? What did you learn about yourself without anyone ever saying it out loud?
What belief about yourself or your people did you inherit through school that you now recognize wasn’t neutral, but rather conditioning?
Did your education bring your mind into harmony with the life you actually have to face or did it prepare you to perform inside a system that was never built for you?
Where do you see ‘cooperation’ in your workplace or community that is really just control with better branding?
Do you invest financially, emotionally, socially in Black institutions? Or do you critique them from a distance?
Were you ever afforded the privilege of failure? Or were you trained to survive without margin?
When you hear ‘community,’ what do you actually feel? Who taught you that definition?
